Acid reflux, also called GERD, is an annoying and painful condition that occurs when stomach acid backs up into your esophagus. This results in a burning sensation after you eat, or for some, while sleeping at night.

3. Try to eat small meals or snacks through out the day. Starving all day and making up for it at suppertime is a sure way to start a severe episode of acid reflux at night.

4. Wear comfortable clothing. The pressure of a tight waistband can promote heartburn symptoms. Don't force yourself into your favorite pants just to look good- dress comfortably, and you will look and feel great.

5. Remember to bring your medication. Even if your symptoms are under control at home, don't let heartburn ruin your vacation. Pack some extra medication, just in case you end up eating and drinking more than you anticipated.

6. Don't spend all your time lying down. Sleeping too much and relaxing in the sun can encourage acid reflux symptoms. When you recline, it is easier for stomach acid to back up into your esophagus. To prevent this, be sure to elevate your head on two or more pillows at all times

Acid reflux disease starts when the muscle at the bottom of the esophagus becomes weak, and does not properly work. When this valve malfunctions, stomach acid can back up into the esophagus, irritating the lining, and causing a persistent burning sensation. The first step in solving the puzzle of what foods to avoid is to keep a food diary. Track which foods trigger symptoms in your own digestive system. Often, identifying your personal food triggers and avoiding them is all that is needed to relieve the problem.

Common food triggers include acidic fruits and juices, such as orange and grapefruit, strong spices, tomato sauces, dairy products, coffee, alcohol and tobacco. This list may appear to include all of your favorite foods, but not all foods are triggers for all people. You might find that eliminating only one or two foods from this list will bring you relief.

For some people, changing from eating three full meals a day to having six smaller meals is successful for controlling the symptoms. Others find that not eating for three hours before bed solves the problem.

Acid reflux is difficult to diagnose in children, and as with my first child, it can take weeks or months to find out the reason for their constant crying and vomiting. I was certainly put out when I found out she had been suffering for weeks and we couldn?t help! No parent ever wants their children to experience illness or pain, and it?s even more difficult when you are a first time parent. The doctor advised us that babies and infants commonly suffer with acid reflux, but thankfully there are medications that relieve all their symptoms almost immediately.

If food, milk or stomach acid manages to make its way up the esophagus instead of being contained in the stomach for digesting, it is painful and very uncomfortable. This is acid reflux, and often it is accompanied by acidic burps and acidic vomiting. Since all babies are known to spit up a lot it?s hard to tell if they have reflux. If the vomiting occurs regularly, accompanied by crying and sleeping difficulties, or arching their back and throwing their head side to side, the doctor or pediatrician will usually advise you that acid reflux is the problem. The reason babies tend to suffer with the problem more than any other age groups is because their sphincter muscles at the base of the esophagus haven?t strengthened or grown enough to hold the food in. When acid reflux is the diagnosis, medication will be prescribed. For less serious cases, Mylanta or the like can be purchased without a prescription. As a parent, you may not think about the problem of acid reflux in infant. The truth, however, is that this is a common part of childhood.

You are likely familiar with the expression "spitting up" food? This usually applies to mild acid reflux. In most cases, children grow out of it. This is less a medical problem and more of the body reacting to food. As children age, the need to vomit lessens and, eventually, disappears.

There are times, though, that infant acid reflux remains. That is why you must know how to recognize it and what to do about it.

Infant Acid Reflux: Why Does It Occur
Many seem to believe that acid reflux only effects adults. This is not true; the symptoms of it can occur in children as young as two months. Acid reflux is not limited to age. It does, however, usually disappear with time.

Most children can grow out of acid reflux. This is because it is not so much a problem as a natural impulse. Children do not have full control over their bodies and spitting up food can become a by-product of that. Until your child is eighteen months, he or she can easily display symptoms of acid reflux.

Infant Acid Reflux: Symptoms
Keep in mind that the symptoms found here are typical for most children. If your son or daughter is exhibiting these, then you should not be alarmed. It is only when they persist after eighteen months (or occur too often to be deemed "spitting up") that you should talk with your doctor. Things to look for include:

?Irritability during feeding

Vitamin C affects acid reflux in two different manners. One way is direct, and the other is in a very roundabout way. Many things that are well known for having vitamin C in them are trigger foods for acid flare-ups and the subsequent heartburn. It is also important for the strength and growth of bones and teeth. However, many who find that citrus and vitamin C aggravates or stimulates stomach acid production will avoid the foods, and thus, problems start to appear.

When you notice that you are not getting enough vitamin C, you might be tempted to take a supplement. This is something you should discuss with your doctor before you begin. Though you can get some from supplements, they can cause problems. If you are taking too much, your body must work overtime to get rid of the excess. This can lead to liver damage over time. It might also contribute to joint pain in some people. If it is used excessively, it can produce softening of the bones. Also, these supplements can trigger excess acid production and irritation in the stomach in the very same ways that citrus fruits will. It is far safer to find your vitamin C in food sources that will not trigger your acid reflux.

There is some food sources for vitamin C that you can include in your diet to make up for what you are not getting from the more obvious sources. If you find that citrus does not bother you very much in regards to your acid reflux syndrome, then you can eat those and be done with it.

However, if it does bother you, as it does many others, you should try to have some of the following each day and even each meal. You can try papaya, strawberries, bell peppers, brussel sprouts, broccoli, kale, cantaloupe, and kiwi. Some may exacerbate symptoms but you may find you can get what you need from some of them. Tomatoes are a great source, but they tend to aggravate acid reflux.

If you are concerned about your vitamin C intake, you can talk to your doctor. Remember that a supplement might actually do more harm than good if you have acid reflux syndrome, and many doctors will not suggest taking vitamin C as a supplement. If your doctor recommends the supplement, taking them in small doses in the middle of meals might help reduce excess acid production. Keep track of what foods you are eating and how many supplements you might be taking. Remember that the body does not store vitamin C, so you should find out what your body needs each day, and make sure you are getting it from the foods that are easily tolerated by your system.
