Is there a connection between bad breath and acid reflux? Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a condition where stomach contents return up the esophagus, sometimes all the way to the mouth, causing heartburn and an unpleasant bitter taste. Many professionals and health writers list GERD as a possible cause of bad breath, but few go into any detail about what produces the bad odor. Given that there may be a demonstrable connection, there are a couple of explanations we can consider.

First, symptoms of bad breath and acid reflux often strike after consumption of a large meal. Many foods, though we love to eat them, don't smell too good on the breath afterwards. These include garlic (probably the best known food cause of bad breath), onions, strong cheeses, spicy foods, alcoholic beverages, and a number of other foods. When a recently consumed meal is pushed back up the esophagus, it wouldn't be surprising that an unpleasant smell is produced on the breath.

Secondly, it's no secret that one's stomach contents don't smell too good. The stomach is an acid environment where foods start to break down in preparation for digestive processes in the intestine. If enough time has passed since the food was consumed, stomach contents that return up the esophagus in a case of GERD will have the sharp acidic smell of vomit - an unpleasant odor producing an atypical halitosis and suggesting a link between bad breath and acid reflux.

Thirdly, in cases of chronic GERD, acid stomach liquids repeatedly come in contact with, and burn, the lining of the esophagus. Because the damage recurs frequently, the tissue never has time to heal completely and is thus chronically irritated with continual production of dead tissue. Dead tissue has an unpleasant odor, and when it is present in the esophagus, it's likely to produce an indirect connection between bad breath and acid reflux.

But, the truth is, there doesn't seem to be a really strong correlation between bad breath and acid reflux itself. A relatively low percentage of people with GERD experience chronic halitosis. Instead, researchers recently reported at the 71st Annual Scientific Meeting of the American College of Gastroenterology (2006) that there is an apparent connection between proton pump inhibitors (drugs commonly used to treat GERD), and chronic bad breath. The drugs, it seems, may cause an overgrowth of odor producing bacteria in the mouth - and anaerobic odor producing bacteria in the mouth are by far the most common cause of chronic halitosis.

Acid Reflux Explained

Acid reflux is a complaint which lets the stomach acids back up into the esophagus. It is a chronic, recurrent disease that will not go away on its own. Luckily Acid Reflux is a treatable condition and you should inquire of your doctor what treatments are available and correct for you. You must realize that if your acid reflux remains untreated for too long a time, you could end up with it for a lifetime. Acid reflux is also called GERD or Gastroesophageal Reflux.

Heartburn, also referred to as acid indigestion, is a very common symptom of reflux. The usual symptom of GERD is a burning sensation to the rear of the breast bone. If you have any symptom of acid reflux, or if you have to take antacids on more than three occasions in a one week timeframe, then you should contact your doctor. One example of a severe symptom is the inability to hold down your food.

A recent study has found that drinking alcohol, tea and coffee may not be the cause of acid reflux disease as once thought. The precise cause-and-effect mechanism of acid reflux and has not up until now been established. Spicy foods do not cause acid reflux disease, although they do appear to make it worse for some. Whatever the cause of acid reflux, it is often a chronic disease. These days, health practitioners are looking towards obesity as one of the main causes of Acid Reflux. Tomatoes and tomato-based products are one example of an everyday food that can be responsible for acid indigestion or acid reflux. Asthma has been known to cause acid reflux disease, and vice versa.

One of the fundamentals of treatment of Acid Reflux is to raise the head of the bed. One of the most common medications for use in the treatment of acid reflux is antacids. Most physicians will first of all suggest changes in lifestyle for treatment of acid reflux. A good and cost effective investment in a treatment program for Acid Reflux should include an adjustable bed with its many beneficial features. Fortunately this is an easy disease to identify, and there are plenty of options available for treatment.

To sum up - Heartburn or Acid Reflux is quite a common disorder amongst folk, and affects all of us at some time or another Acid reflux is a recurrent disease that does not just disappear on its own, it needs treatment and/or a change of lifestyle Acid reflux is also named gastroesophageal reflux.

Causes of Acid Reflux: Lower Esophageal Sphincter

Gastro esophageal reflux disease, also known as acid reflux disease, is cause by a variety of things, the lower esophageal sphincter being one of them. While some think that fatty foods or high cholesterol foods are the reason for acid reflux, there may be much larger problems than your diet. One possibility is that, in some patience, excess acid may be produced. When your body does not use all the acid it produces, the acid needs to go somewhere, so it goes up, causing heartburn. There may be other factors at work; following is what you need to know about the lower esophageal sphincter.

The lower esophageal sphincter is the tube of muscle that goes from the bottom of the throat to the stomach and is one of the biggest factors in acid reflux. In the majority of individuals, this area is active most of the time. The lower esophageal sphincter is a gatekeeper of sorts, between the stomach where the food is digested, and the esophagus where the food travels after it is swallowed.

What happens to cause acid reflux is that the lower esophageal sphincter is actually malfunctioning. When everything works right, the sphincter will open to let food through to the stomach, then close tightly afterward. When you suffer from gastro esophageal reflux disease, the lower esophageal sphincter does not function correctly and does not shut tight, this lets partially digested food out of the stomach, causing heartburn.

There are a couple of ways that the abnormally functions causing the reflux. A weak contraction of the muscle is one way. When the muscle does not close tightly, the reflux prevention is reduced. The second way the lower esophageal sphincter can malfunction, or not function properly is when the it does not close tightly for a prolonged period and it gets too relaxed, and this allows acid reflux to occur more often than normal.

When you eat a meal or snack, your stomach has to distend to accommodate the new material. When you eat a large meal, the stomach can stretch too much, the lower esophageal sphincter then becomes too active and acid reflux can occur. Even if you don?t usually suffer from acid reflux, can sometime suffer after a large meal, because the lower esophageal sphincter has become too active.

Jill Seimer reports on health issues at RefluxLife.com and wrote on acid reflux disorder symptoms from her experience with heartburn and acid reflux.

Crohn's? IBS? Colitis? Acid Reflux? Try Holistic Medicine

>>  STOP acid reflux and heartburn problems. Click Here <<

Do you have gastrointestinal problems such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), Colitis, Crohns Disease, Acid Reflux Disease, among many others? Are you sick (literally) and tired of going from doctor to doctor only to be handed a prescription slip and pushed out the door? Do you enjoy the many side effects these prescriptions cause? Are you looking for a solution to the problem instead of covering it up with drugs, or removing it with surgery? Then try holistic medicine.

I am very happy to see our nation slowly catching on to the idea that natural medicine is the better way to go. It angers me however that insurance companies (who we pay premiums to) do not give us the choice to choose what path we want to take to heal ourselves. Holistic medicine is not cheap because there are very few insurance companies that cover your office visits, and none that I am aware that assists with nutritional supplements used by holistic doctors. Now don't get me wrong, modern medicine has its place in this world, and heaven knows all the good it has done for mankind, but there is a limit to how far it should go in the treatment of health conditions. Modern medicine knows next to nothing about the digestive system and how to fix it when it is in duress. Just ask any person suffering from any of the conditions listed above. The old saying of you don't have anything if you don't have your health is a very true statement.

I suffered with Crohn's Disease for 5 years before I started going to a holistic doctor. I went through 2 colonoscopies, and visited 3 different gastroenterologists. The first doctor performed my first colonoscopy, and found a mass of tissue close to my ileocecal valve. The tissue biopsy that he took came back negative for cancer (thank the Lord), but they could not tell what the tissue was. He referred me to another gastroenterologist who on my first visit, told me flat out that all he wanted to do was cut me open and remove the mass so he could try to figure out what it was. Needless to say my wife and I left his office never to return! Only later did we find out that he was a surgical gastroenterologist, so that's all he knew how to do was cut people open and remove their insides (comforting I know). The third doctor I visited was a medical gastroenterologist. He also wanted to perform a colonoscopy, and found more tissue masses etc. When I asked him what caused my condition, he said that medical science does not know what causes these kinds of conditions, but knows how to control them somewhat. He wrote me a prescription for a steroid medication, and sent me out the door.

Thus began my crusade to figure out what was going on with my body and why. I never did take any of that steroid medication that last doctor prescribed me, because I had enough sense to get online and start researching what it was he was wanting me to take and what it did. The drug is an immune suppressant. You see people with digestive problems often times have an over active immune system, thus triggering inflammation throughout the digestive system. The steroid suppresses the immune function to reduce inflammation. It does nothing to get rid of what is causing the inflammation, just masking the effects.

To fully understand how the body gets afflicted with these digestive problems you need to understand how the digestive system works in conjunction with the rest of your body. The digestive tract has been called the body's second brain because there are more nerve endings in the digestive tract than the brain itself. Think about what the digestive system does for you....it is the extracts of all vitamins, minerals, and other materials your body needs to function from the foods you eat. Without it were dead! New research indicates that most diseases of the body are a result of a failure somewhere in the digestive system. So if you are afflicted with a serious digestive problem, and you take a drug that masks the problem instead of fixing (and has the potential of serious side effects which include may other diseases), sure you symptoms may subside for a while, but in the meantime your condition will worsen or spread!

Finally I decided to go to a holistic doctor. It was the smartest thing I have ever done for my health! My doctor knew more on how the body works, and all the organic compounds it uses and more specifically what organs used them, than any medical doctor I have ever been to! I was on my way to recovery after my first visit. I had a plan on how to recover my health. It wasn't a prescription for some drug that he gets kickbacks from the drug companies for prescribing, it was a professionally planned regiment of natural compounds that would kill parasitic infections, reduce my inflammation, assist in digestion of foods, and nourish my body with the critical vitamins and minerals I was seriously lacking. Yes it took me well over a year to get myself back to normal. You have to take into account the fact that I had been living with several parasites in my digestive system for several years to get to the point I was at, so there is no way I would heal overnight. You know its funny how over the years all my doctors told me that I had IBS, and that I needed to eat more fiber. If only I had known about holistic medicine back then! Sure holistic medicine is expensive, but can you truly put a price on your health and well being? I sure can't, it has been worth every penny.

Do your research! No matter where you go and what you do, there is always going to be someone with a horror story about a holistic doctor, or even a modern medicine MD. It's just unavoidable, people make mistakes every day. All I can say is this: do your research! Find a holistic doctor that is highly recommended, Answer any of their questions with total honesty, stick to the regiments they give you (to the T) and always be a well informed patient! If the doctor you go to makes you uncomfortable, don't go back! Find someone you are comfortable with. Trust your instincts! Your reading this aren't you? Your instincts have brought you this far, searching for answers a medical doctor could not give you. Keep going! Keep digging! You deserve to feel normal again!

After suffering with Crohn's disease for 5 years, I finally trusted my instincts that there was something very wrong with modern medicines approach to digestive disorders, and used a holistic approach to heal myself. No scars from surgery, and no side effects from dangerous drugs!

Alternative Therapies for Acid Reflux Disease

>>  STOP acid reflux and heartburn problems. Click Here <<

Acid Reflux Disease, or GERD, is a common disease which affects approximately 5-7%
of the population. It occurs when acid from the stomach backs up into the esophagus,
a long, thin, muscular tube, which connects the mouth and the stomach. This often
causes a constant burning sensation behind the breastbone, which is commonly known
as heartburn. Long-term or persistent heartburn should be evaluated by a doctor,
as heartburn can imitate the symptoms of heart disease.

Once you have been properly diagnosed as having Acid Reflux Disease, there are a
variety of treatment options available to you. Many doctors recommend over the counter
medications, developed to reduce stomach acid, such as antacids or prokinetic agents.
Some patients who are unable to control their symptoms with non-prescription medication
may either choose prescription antacids or surgery, or opt for a combination of
the two.

There are other options available, however, to help you manage your symptoms. Many
patients are able to control their disease by simply by making lifestyle changes.
Here are a few tips, to get you started.

Probably the most important lifestyle change that you could make to help you manage
your GERD symptoms is the simplest- avoid the foods and drinks that make you uncomfortable!
While this may sound like common sense, many sufferers find it difficult to make
dietary changes. Try replacing fatty, deep-fried foods with healthier options, such
as tasty summer salads and steamed vegetables. You should also try to limit your
intake of caffeinated beverages, as caffeine is a known contributor to GERD, so
opt for decaf teas and coffees instead.

Stress reduction is also key to the management of acid reflux disease. The body
manufactures more stomach acid when under stress, so it is important to learn to
relax. Meditation is a very useful tool for effectively reducing stress levels,
so incorporating one or two short meditation sessions into each day can help you
to relax. Likewise, yoga is also recommended as being an effective way to manage
stress, so try to find a class near you.

By incorporating simple changes into your life, you can not only better manage your
GERD symptoms, but also enhance the overall quality of your life.

Metabolism drug induced Weight Loss Can Be Effective.Terje Brooks EllingsenA metabolism
drug like ephedrine, has shown many people how to burn fat fast. These drugs however,
are associated with a certain degree of risk. What about their effectiveness compared
to these risks? And what should you do to minimize the probability of side effects.

What Is an Ephedrine-based metabolism drug?

Ephedrine is derived from the plant ephedra. This is a perennial shrub with several
different species growing in certain regions of Asia, Europe, North America and
South America.

Many of these varities, especially the Asian and European ones, contain the active
substance ephedrine alkaloids or EAs where Ephedrine is the major EA.

In China ephedrine has been used for more than 5,000 years to treat diseases like
asthma, fever, colds, and even malaria.

Ephedrine products are sold in pill, liquid and even bar form.

Ephedrine products are often combined with caffeine, aspirin, and a variety of other
herbs considered to aid a fat burning process.

Caffeine is added because it has been proven to enhance and prolong the effects
of ephedrine. Especially for weight loss, u

always purchase from reliable companies with extensive label information rather
than buying a no-name brand off the Internet.

check the label carefully.

When you know the exact milligram amount of the active alkaloid

Start up with 10 mg per day (24 hours)

gradually and slowly increase the dosage up to 90 mg a day

within this limit, keep to the highest dosage that doesnt have you experiencing
negative side effects.

Nutrition and metabolism disorder.Terje Brooks EllingsenWhat is the relationship
between intake of nutrition and metabolism disorder? Is slow metabolism the cause
of my overweight? Are there any types of nutrition that can speed it up? Could a
pill speed it up?

There are many myths and misconceptions about metabolism. The idea that a low metabolic
rate is always responsible for excess weight is one of them.

Another is that a slower-than-average metabolism, means you're destined to be obese.

What is metabolism?

Metabolism is the rate at which your body breaks down the nutrients in food to produce
energy. A person with a "fast" metabolism, for example, utilizes calories more quickly,
in some cases making it easier to stave off excess pounds.

Your metabolism is primary determined by your body composition: the more total fat-free
mass you have the higher your resting metabolic rate will be.

Other factors that determine your metabolism is

heredity

hormones such as thyroid and insulin

stress

calorie intake

exercise

medications

Your baseline metabolism is determined at birth.

When youve passed the age of 30 and without exercising, the metabolism decreases
with the age.

However, you can increase your metabolism to a certain extent by exercising and
building lean muscle.

Each time you significantly reduce calories to lose weight youll experience a temporary
decrease of 5-10 percent in metabolism.

Workouts for increasing your metabolism

A high-intensity cardio workout that really increases your heart rate will make
you lose the most calories and represent the most significant short-term metabolic
booster; between 20 and 30 percent. However, it won't have a permanent effect on
your metabolism. After your workout, your metabolism will return to its previous
level over several hours--but you'll continue burning extra calories in the meantime.

Though weight training is the most effective way to build and preserve your lean
muscles, the muscle influence on metabolism is pretty slight. Each pound of muscle
gained, can raise your metabolism up to 15 calories per day.

Can certain foods affect your metabolism?

Most of the scientific research reports that the type of food you eat has no significant
impact on your long term metabolism rate. So fats, proteins and carbs seem to affect
metabolism similarly.

Scientific data also tells that protein can slightly increase metabolic rate, but
only temporarly.

The more calories you cut, the lower your metabolism rate will drop. An extremely
low-calorie diet with fewer than 800 calories a day could cause your metabolic rate
to decrease by more than 10 percent.

It is not what you eat but how much you eat what really matters. For a safe, sustainable
weight loss, the average person shouldn't eat less than 1,200 calories a day.

Spicy foods, such as chili peppers and curry can increase metabolism, but not enough
to have a weight loss effect. Its too small and short-lived.

Pills and Supplements

No pills or supplements have proven to increase metabolism enough to help you lose
weight.

Some pills, have been shown to lower metabolism, and thus cause a weight gain. Examples
of such pills are those used to treat depression and bipolar disorder.

Find out your daily calorie need

For losing one pound of body fat a week, you must create a deficit of 500 calories
a day. The most reasonable way to do that, and thus avoid a big metabolic decrease,
is through a combination of exercise and diet. You could for example eliminate 2.50
calories from your diet, and add enough activity to burn an extra 250.

Here is how you do it:

1. Determine your basic metabolism rate or RMR

RMR = 655 + (9.6 X your weight in kilograms*)

+ (1.8 X your height in centimetres**)

- (4.7 X your age in years)

2. Factor in your daily activity

Multiply your RMR by the appropriate activity factor:

If you have little or no activity:RMR X 1.2

If you are performing light exercise 1-3 days a week:RMR X 1.375

If you are performing moderate exercise 3-5 days a week: RMR X 1.55

If you are performing strenuous exercise 6-7 days a week: RMR X

1.725

If you perform very strenuous daily exercise, sports or physical

job or training twice a day: RMR X 1.9

3. Your final figure represents the minimum number of daily calories that you need
to maintain your current weight.

Notes:(*) Your weight in kilograms = your weight in pounds divided by 2.2.

(**) Your height in centimeters = your height in inches multiplied by 2.54.

Why You Should Burn Body Fat.Terje Brooks EllingsenAre you overweight? Then you
probably want to lose some weight. It is obvious that youll burn body fat by increasing
your metabolism. But be sure that what you burn is fat, not muscles.

Some statistics

After age 25, the average person in America gains one pound or more a year, which
means at the age of 50 an average person is 25 pounds or more heavier than he or
she was 25 years ago.

As you age your metabolism is slowing down, causing your body to burn less fat.

Without exercising regularly, the average American loses a pound of muscle each
year.

A minority of Americans exercise in a significant way, which means less than 50
minutes of exercise per week. Two out of five Americans do not exercise at all.

Motivations for weight loss

Most people's primary motivation for weight loss is to improve their appearance.

Other motivational factors are the many health benefits of proper nutrition and
regular exercise.

Why obesity is dangerous

Reduction of excess body fat plays a vital role in maintaining good health and avoiding
disease.

Medical evidence shows that obesity poses a significant threat to health as well
as to longevity:. Excess body fat is connected to

heart disease

cancer

diabetes

gall bladder disease

gastro-intestinal disease

sexual dysfunction

osteoarthritis

stroke

Why is excess body fat linked to heart disease?

About 4/5s of deaths caused by heart disease and cancer, are linked to life-style
factors, inactivity included.

Your heart has to work harder to pump blood to the lungs and to the extra fat throughout
your body. Therefore it takes more energy for you to breathe. This extra workload
might cause your heart to become enlarged and high blood pressure and life-threatening
erratic heartbeats might be the consequences.

Overweight people often also have high cholesterol levels, making them more likely
to develop arteriosclerosis. When blood vessels are so narrow that vital organs
like the heart, kidneys or brain dont get enough blood, this becomes life-threatening.

It might go without saying, but the narrower the blood vessels become, the harder
your heart has to pump, which results in increased blood pressure. . High blood
pressure itself poses several health risks, like heart attack, stroke and kidney
problems.

Does excess body fat cause cancer?

In general, research has linked cancer-causing chemicals (carcinogens) to excess,
actually as a storage place for these.

Excess fat has been linked to a higher rate of breast and uterine cancer for women

Excess fat has been linked to colon and prostate cancer for men.

How is excess body fat related to diabetes?

There is a delicate balance between the relative amount of body fat, the level of
blood sugar and the hormone we call insulin.

Excess blood sugar is stored in the liver and other vital organs, and converted
to fat as soon as these organs have got what they need of it.

The pancreas of overweight people often produces more and more insulin. The problem
is however, that the body is not able to utilize this to regulate its blood sugar
levels.

This poor regulation of blood sugar and insulin causes an inbalance in the system,
which results in diabetes. This disease may in its turn cause heart disease, kidney
failure, blindness, amputation, and death.

How Reducing Body Fat Reduces Disease Risk

At an American University, researchers studied a sample of people following a certain
weight management program. This study showed

decreased HDL cholesterol levels

decreased triglyceride levels,

decreased blood pressure.

increased waist-to-hip ratio,

an active lifestyle can slow or stop the disease process for most people, even those
with a history of heart disease in the family.

Other studies have shown that programs that includes

regular physical activity,

low-fat diets

stress reduction

reverse heart disease processes.

while other studies shows that reducing body fat through an active lifestyle and
low fat diets mean reduced risk for

prostate cancers for men,

breast and uterine cancers for women

non-insulin dependent diabetes for both genders.

So, what shall I do?

You have to change to a new lifestyle, by committing yourself to a long term process
that gradually will lead you to a healthier life. This process requires persistence
and patience, especially in the beginning. If you stay persistent, your new lifestyle
will automatically take over, and it will become natural for you. This process will
contain

moderate, long term fat loss

aerobic exercise

strength exercise

Here is the benefits 90 percent of overweight people following this advice has gained:

improved heart function,

improved blood pressure,

improved glucose tolerance,

improved cholesterol levels,

lowering requirements for medication,

eight times less likely to die from cancer than the unfit,

53 percent less likely to die from other diseases than the unfit

eight times less likely to die from heart disease than the unfit people.

But, how can I get started?

The first phase in such a process has shown to be the hardest it is here most people
drop out. The longer you stay in the process, the more likely you are to succeed.
And trust me; after you - by means of persistency and patience - have passed this
critical start phase, the fun and excitement you gradually will experience will
make the change well worth the effort.

You must make the decision to commit to this lifestyle changing process.

If you ever feel tempted to skip it for a day or even give up, confront yourself
with your commitment, and go on.

How to stay motivated?

Allow plenty of time for the changes. You should give yourself several years for
the changes to take place. If you do so, your body will adjust comfortably and the
probability of maintaining this healthy lifestyle permanently, will be higher.
